CHAPTER SIXTEEN

THE BARRIER ISLANDS WERE ONLY SEPARATED by veiny inlets, so traveling from Indigo Isle to Moise Island didn’t take much time. I hopped out of the boat and braced myself as Lyrica beelined toward me, her mermaid curls bouncing with each step.

“Sonny, girl, you ghosted me.”

Concealed behind my sunglasses, I rolled my eyes and looped my messenger bag around my neck.

“I had to talk to the island manager about letting us use another spot for a scene last night. All. By. My. Self.” Lyrica jabbed a purple-tipped fingernail in the air to express her point.

“Looks like you survived.” I sidestepped her and started up the beach with her hot on my heels. She continued whining but I tuned her out and made my way to Vee’s tent.

“’Sup.” Zayden Ellisor gave us a chin-jerk as he exited the tent with a fresh new sheen to his dark skin. A tall brick house of muscle and swagger, he definitely fit the description of his sports jock character.

Lyrica and I craned our necks to watch him walk past.

Snapping out of the gawking trance, I moved inside the tent as Lyrica followed after Zayden. The girl was like an easily distracted toddler.

“Hey, girl, hey,” I sang, putting on my happy face.

Vee glanced my way before refocusing on spraying something on Maura Young’s back. “Hello, my dear.”

“Do you have any blue nail polish?”

“In the pink case.” She motioned toward a fuchsia container.

I crossed over to it and easily found about ten different shades of blue. I grabbed one with fast-drying on the label. Reading the bottom, I huffed a quiet laugh. Indigo Sky. “Can I buy this off you?”

Vee squinted at the bottle through a pair of red-framed glasses that held no prescription but matched her strapless romper perfectly. “No, but you can have it.”

“You sure?”

“Of course, darlin’.” Vee winked at me as she refilled her airbrush.

“Thanks.” I dropped into her chair and quickly painted over my blue-stained nails with more blue. “Are you spraying her back with red?”

“Yes, the pasty emo poet needs a sunburn for today’s scene.” Vee shaded a spot on the actress’s shoulder. By the time she was done, Maura’s artificial sunburn looked so severely real, I wanted to douse her in lidocaine and aloe.

Maura checked her scorched reflection in the trifold mirror and cringed. “You’re an artist, Vee.”

“You gave me a perfect canvas, mademoiselle.” Vee returned the compliment in a French accent and then sent the actress on her way. “Au revoir.”

I twisted the lid back on the polish and blew on my nails.

Vee stretched her arms over her head, bending to the left and then the right, and released a long sigh. “How are you feeling?”

Before I could answer, Whit entered the tent.

“Ladies.” He tipped his head, debonair as ever. “Vee, I need a word with Sonny.”

I started to stand, but Vee pretty much blocked me in her chair. “Go ahead then, suga’. Little ole me won’t be a botha’.”

His eyes narrowed, not buying her genteel lady act. “Alone.
